5: Observe, Observe, Observe

In those first few days and weeks of your clinical rotation, if there is anything at all going on in the department, you need to be there. If you are not the only student, you will need to divide things up equitably. But never let something happen unobserved. This is your time to take notes, notice differences in techniques, patients, and sonographers. Listen to how the sonographer talks to the patient, what kind of questions they ask, and how they explain the procedure. Notice the brightness and contrast in the images,  the annotation, what is measured, and where the calipers are placed. Pay attention to patient positioning, transducer orientation and angle, and body window utilization. Again, a small notebook and pen are extremely useful. If you do not want to write notes while observing the exam–sometimes this is distracting–sit down immediately after the exam and write them. Take the initiative, do not wait to be asked.
